Tribute to François-Régis Mahieu
On January 14, 2026, Professor François-Régis Mahieu passed away after a long battle with illness. Founder of the journal Ethique économique/Ethics and Economics (formerly Ethics, Economics and Common Goods), he developed a body of thought nourished by constant dialogue with Anglo-Saxon social and moral philosophy, and with continental philosophy, in particular the works of John Rawls, Paul Ricoeur, and Emmanuel Levinas. His academic career was marked by a broad disciplinary openness, promoting the field of economic ethics among his colleagues and the general public. In addition to his significant contributions to public economics and development economics, he was a pioneer in the field of economic ethics, fiercely defending the concepts of responsibility and personhood. A committed academic and esteemed economist, François-Régis Mahieu leaves behind a rich body of thought.
